Apologies for the late recap, but it's been a busy few days. Bookending the weekend with wins is fun but also tiring so this roundup is highlights and grades. That said - important win on Monday; nice job all around.
Offense:
- Stars of the Game go to Ian and Jeff I: they combined for 5/7, 3R, 4RBI and 2HRs. Gaudy lines from #3 and #4 in the lineup
- Honorable Mentions: Jerry (+2RBI, R), Hans (+ 1 run) and Seltz all reached base twice.
- overall team grade => B: We did score 7 runs and had more than 4 hits for the first time in 3 games but still did not break out against a weak opponent. Signs of life are there though so it's a marked improvement over our recent drought.
Defense:
- Play of the game goes to the Hans-Jerry connect on the put out at home plate. Perfectly executed on both ends. I think Jerry even winked at the guy as he tagged him (or did he just have one eye closed?)
- Joe McEwing award: goes to Robbie Hansen for shifting to another position, playing 2B for the injured captain. Not only did he fill in adeptly but he silenced the taunting opposition with put out after put out, including the game ending play. well done.
- overall team grade => A- : BP was once again solid, despite the less than ideal pitching conditions. The D behind him was also strong. Although not as flawless as the last few games, the D held its own across the diamond, making all the plays when we needed them.
Attitude:
- Hate to see guys get injured, but love to see injured guys in the dugout, cheering on their mates. Good showing by Jeff in street clothes on Monday night. Generally i feel a bit removed out there in LF, but i could here Jeff cheering from the bench the whole time. Love it.
- Downside for us was not showing killer instinct and soundly defeating a winless team. Win or lose, nothing has been easy this year and Monday was no exception. That said, a win is a win and we are again above .500.
- The last inning was scary but we survived. Big plays were made at big moments. RWA had the bases loaded twice and BP / the defense came up huge both times. Nicely done.
- Despite our inability to step on the opponents throat and end the game early, we did recognize weakness in RWA and responded with signature SD aggressiveness. Jeff I, Robbie, Jerry and myself all pushed the envelope on the basepaths and forced the Angels' hand (sorry about the last AB, Seltz!)..Good sign of a team that is trying to do what it can to ignite the offense and scrap together runs.
overall team grade => A- ; have to stop playing to the competition but i think some confidence is back and a championship mentality is lurking under the surface. Just need to let the monster out of the cage...
next game is slated for Monday evening at 9PM on 125th. tough time slot, so if it is not rescheduled we need as many bodies as possible. i'm IN.
