Shattered Dreams Sweeps Blue Star in Dramatic Walk Off Style
It has a storied past. With roots as an American gospel hymn, it has become a folk song of sorts. If you are the one other person besides me whose watched Treme on HBO, you'd know that jazz musicians in New Orleans have adopted the tune as an accompaniment to a funeral procession. "When the Saints Go Marching In" has become an American classic and it's legend has grown. Last Friday night, it spelled the demise of the playoff hopes of the Blue Star Jets and lifted the spirits of Shattered Dreams Nation.
Was Louie Armstrong thinking of the clutch-ness of Flatine in the bottom of the 7th? Ed admitted to be out of his comfort zone most of the game but ended with a very respectable line of 2/5, 2R and 2RBI and most importantly, led off the final frame with a huge base hit, chugging through a Jet misplay to tie the game at 12.
Fats Domino adapted the song to early rock and roll, but did he Dream to think that the horns blaring would inspire another legend - Jon Seltzer - to knock in the tying run with a huge triple. Johnny Softball went 3/5, with 3R and 2RBI and a rifle relay throw to end a Blue Star rally. He left everything on the field that night, including the tendons that connect his thigh muscles. Ice up, Chizzle.
The jazz standard has been nicknamed "the Monster" by many a musician (check Wikipedia!). However, after Friday night's performance I think Robbie Hansen has a new moniker. Down by 4 in the sixth inning, the artist formerly known as Bobby Pants had a key RBI and did it again one frame later. 2-5 with a run and two late and clutch RBIs. Monster performance.
The dramatic walk off comeback capped a see-saw battle with Blue Star who were clinging to playoff dreams and fighting to avoid a sweep. It was the SD version of Bark at the Park, so the dugout was full. The bad guys jumped out to a 4 run lead in the first but the standing room only crowd of one would not leave disappointed. The Dreams answered with 8 straight runs. It was the longest day of the year and the Jet's pitching staff felt it - needing 2 pitchers to get through the evening. Both the top and the bottom of the SD lineup saw to that, reaching base a combined 15 out of 17 trips to the plate, scoring 6 runs and knocking in 5.
- Jeff D: finding a way all night to get on and get home; 1-2, 2BB, 3R, and a broken green light ;)
- BP: his pitching was eclipsed by his prowess at the plate; break out the warm up jacket - this guy gives the opposition tough ABs all season; 4-4, R, 2RBI
- Will: no danger of having to grow a moustache, up to 8 walks on the year; 2-3, 2BB, R, 2RBI
- Hans: move over Matt Stairs, Joel is a professional hitter; 3-3, BB, R
The Jets responded with 8 unanswered runs themselves. However, strong pitching by BP and some solid D kept the game in reach. Young sub Carter arrived and was handed an SD T Shirt from 2007. His uniform was older than his driver's license and it's a good thing. Young legs helped the 3 man outfield patrol the turf and minimize the damage of a late scratch.
The supermoon also shone on the QH contingent. Matt made his second start for the Dreams and once again quietly tallied the GWRBI as Hans jubilantly slid home with the winning run to a chorus of brass and adulation.
The St Louis Blues play "the Saints" after every goal. So what if they are a "pro team"??...I don't think the Golden Brett has experienced any more of a high than we did last Friday night. On the championship mix, it's time to add some jazz right after Def Leppard. With every win this team becomes more complete. We've faltered in the encore before but it's time to change our tune.
Now - get psyched and prime yourself to hand Double Down their first loss. It's July 4th week but the Dreams are open for business. I, for one, can't wait to go to work. See ya'll Monday night...
