Gents,
I had a busy week and unfortunately didn't get the creative juices flowing in time to give you the heroic writeup you deserve. However, on the eve of our last regular season game, I thought I'd warm you up with some well earned shout outs and highlights from or 100 degree victory last Thursday.
on to it...
In the stifling heat and humidity, somehow our bats remained frigid as we could muster only a paltry 4 hits and 1 run through the first 5 innings. We had been here before this year and with the undefeated Doubledown squad waiting for us in our final game, I think we all knew how critical a sixth win last Thursday would be.
Even though our offense once again struggled to break out of it's dog day malaise, our pitching and defense kept us in the game. Then - with one out in the top of the sixth, Hans laced a single and gave us a glimmer of hope. We were thirsty for runs and what started as a drip of hope, quickly turned to a flood of success, as 10 consecutive base runners followed in Joel's footsteps. In total 8 men crossed the plate before the third out was recorded.
Intervention quickly answered with 4 of their own, in the bottom half of the frame, to cut it to a one run lead.....As if the heat couldn't have been turned up any higher! The SD-BOL kickstarted another 3 run rally in the 7th and the Dreams narrowly escaped as the opposition's best hitter was left to watch Jeff Isaac make a juggling catch to secure the victory. I swear that in the nanoseconds between that ball perilously popping up from Ed's glove, I think BP almost darted from the mound to catch it himself (and possibly kill Jeff in the process). Crisis averted...whew!
As has been the case of late, with our dramatic comebacks, this was another team effort. Eight out of ten scored and 7 of 10 had RBIs. Solid contributions from SD legends CC (who notched 2 walks), Cliebo and Seltz.
Great games by Robbie, BP and #27 who each tallied at least 2 hits and all accounted for 3 runs apiece. Good stuff all around with timely hitting, consistent focus and aggressive baserunning. Nice effort.
Your Stars of the Game are the two Jeffs - each accounted for 4 runs apiece and both came up with some huge clutch hitting. Jeff D is continuing is torrid stretch, going 2/3 + BB, 2R, 2RBIs. For the second game in a row, he notched a late inning game tying RBI and also drew a critical walk in the 7th inning rally. Jeff I, went 3-5 and plated 2 in the sixth AND in the 7th - both times providing essential insurance. Great stuff, Mr. Lover - gator for you with some extra ice...We wish you a speedy recovery
Dreams - we need 7 focused innings and another strong finish tomorrow. It's the last game of the season and a likely playoff preview vs Doubledown.
