Dreams Continue to Build Strong Foundation in 2010, Beating Turner 14-2
Last week's game was more of the same, as Shattered Dreams once again beat up on more of the league's cellar dwellars.
Fans of all ages came out to Jefferson #2 for the first of two Friday Family Nights. Some enjoyed Bud in a brown bag while others guzzled orange juice out of sippy cups, but all were treated to a nice tall glass of SD victory.
Quick highlights:
- Robbie Hansen and Jeff D both broke out offensively last week with 3 hits apiece. Robbie reached base all 4 times and Jeff came one homer short of a cycle...Good stuff!
- Big Stick was the Big Daddy with a mammoth homer to RCF in front of his wife and kids. I haven't seen a baseball moment this heartwarming since The Rookie. Nicely done!
- Hopefully no Anna Benson controversy brewing with this bunch...Hollie knows how to juggle, Aileen can play SS if Seltz needs a day off and Ariel may be hired as a freelancer to put together the SD Yearbook.
- Pitching and D: only 2 runs were surrendered as BP and the defense shut down an inept Turner offense. The fielding was again near perfect and Flat notched his first save of the season - priming himself for a spot start later this year. (In Yorkville, you get credit for a save if your team is up by 13 runs or less or if the tying run is on deck 9 batters from when you start the inning).
To the casual observer, everything is going according to plan. We are 5-0 and rolling. However, while I am encouraged by our start and firmly believe this is the best squad we've had in our team's history, we do need to keep our eye on the prize. The last few weeks we've played some terrible teams and I think there are some things we could've done better.
While we've put up a lot of runs, our hitting has been spotty (especially against those pitchers who are just lobbing the ball). Last week our base running was sometimes sloppy and towards of the end of the game our fielding got a bit lazy. Nothing too dramatic, but still - we can't get too cocky. The two teams that pose us the greatest threat are still left on our schedule and we can't get complacent or too relaxed as we beat up on the lesser competition (Never a good sign when Blue Star outfielders are calling each other off by yelling "lo tengo, Pappi")
There are 3 pieces of the season left and it is my feeling that we need to win 2 or more games in each.
1) 3 contests against below average teams the next three weeks
2) 3 games against the toughest competition in the division (likely other playoff squads - Nuts and Bolts, Blue Star and Citi Ballers). SD will have a target on our backs for these matches. We need to send a message and get ourselves prepped for a higher level of play in the postseason. A regular season title and number one seed could also be critical to a successful run in August.
3) The Playoffs. win or go home...
Season 1 starts tomorrow night. Stick to the fundamentals. Stay focused. Play your ass off... and SD4L
