The last time we were on TJ#3, Robbie resurrected our franchise with the
Throw, igniting an improbable run and turning a nightmare into a Dream
scenario. Last night's postgame involved rehashing the top moments in
SD's illustrious history as we watched Log City hold pitching tryouts.
We were once them. Will they find their Buji? Will they get their
Miracle on 210th Street? Do they have someone who will loft two homers
vs the Twinkies and ride upon a chair amidst a shower of vinegar? Will
they be brash and bold and make it to 3 championships? Who knows? Ask me
in 2023. As for last night, we were their Sambinos.
We were beating up on the Nuts and Bolts while these guys were in junior high and the experience showed last night. After Log City notched 2 runs in the first inning, we had a frame for the ages. A disco legend passed yesterday morning and to pay homage the boys of Summer turned the lineup upside down and round and round, with 13 straight on base (11 hits + 2 walks) - notching a baker's dozen in the scorebook. Flat continued his hot hitting, and if not for his patience in the first, he might've hit for the cycle. Still 3/3, BB, 2runs and a team leading 5 RBI is pretty Hot Stuff.
In the same inning Seltzer blasted a homerun, notching 3 of his 4 RBIs. If I could, I'd buy you some frickles, but Jon also passed us the sad news that Brother Jimmy's (92nd) is no more. Scantily clad waitresses and shitty beer may come and go, yet the Dream remains alive. Now that our unofficial sponsor is gone - perhaps we should etch some hush puppies onto our cleats to dedicate the season?
Collins returned from his vacation with a glow and renewed spirit. CC showed the aggressiveness on the basepaths of yesteryear and legged out a triple like he was rushing to the all you can eat resort buffet. Were they serving banana splits at third base?
BP doesn't get paid to pitch but if he did he'd be Working Hard for the Money (last disco reference I promise). Stingy again, giving up only 5 runs. He was also a big contributor at the plate with 2 hits, 2 runs and 4RBI. Did they give him penecillan or some Andro for that strept throat? He was on.
Too many stats to mention but I'll try...
- In addition to the aforementioned stars - nice line with multiple hits, runs and RBIs for both Hans and myself
- Welcome back Cliebo: 2/4, 2r, RBI
- Jeff D notched 3 more hits last night and has gone 5 for his last 5 and may even have gotten another job offer as he crossed home plate. Shaft - so hot right now...
- Robbie continues to work pitchers with 2 more walks and runs. Solid.
- Jerry has yet to step up to the plate and walk back to the dugout with bat in hand this season. Hang your head high, RawDog. 2 more hits plus a walk and starting to challenge Duff for the Keeper of the Batting Record Championship Award. Do they play Tom Emansky videos on Metro North or something?
Put it in the books as a 20-5 final. This game was called after 4.5 innings (about 3 innings after Blue asked us if he should invoke the "Massacre Rule"). Despite the roll we are on, we cannot beat up on cupcake teams all the way to a championship. This team has renewed spirit and a top place in the standings but we need to continue to play with passion and focus. The schedule gets harder and perhaps Log City will find their pitcher before our next contest.
Let's take nothing for granted. We may not be able to bring a trophy back to Kathy, Mya, Anna and Jess at Brother Jimmys but unlike our heyday haunt, our best days are not behind us. The goal is the same and I believe that to a man, the 12 of us believe we will get that Fishbowl we have been seeking for the past 11 years.
Great win. Let's keep it going.
